Bethalto School District Bond Issue

We are in need of people to walk door to door to obtain signatures for a petition to allow the residents of the Bethalto School District the right to vote on a 10 million dollar Bond issue that the district is wanting to obtain. The school board is voting yes on these bonds and if we can gather 2,000 signatures we can stop the issue from going forward until a proposition can be placed on the ballot in March of 2012.

The reason for the urgency is that we have less than 30 days to get the signatures and get them certified.  We are working in conjunction with many conservatives in the area. This is a great non-partisan issue and we have been trying to get this information out to the public for some time.

We are asking all 9-12 members who live in Madison County to please engage and help us in obtaining these signatures.  This is a perfect opportunity for us to put our organizational system to the test.

The walk folders are located at Mary Goode's office (behind Dairy Queen on 140). We have divided most of the packets up into 60 names.  We will be walking all weekend and ask that you come by and pick up a packet. The packet contains a script and instructions. You may do it on your own time schedule. We are asking that you turn the packet back in as soon as you are finished as we are on a tight time line. The only criterion to obtain signatures is that you live in Madison County. You do not need to live in Bethalto to assist.

We will be walking this weekend and throughout the week and evenings.  We are asking for the big push this weekend so we may deliver as many names to the board as possible on Monday for their meeting.

Please call or email Kathy and let us know if you will be picking up a packet and walking.  We know the weather is not nice, but the opposition is counting on that. If we do not stop these bonds, they will affect the resident's taxes.

You may also call Donna Smith, she is coordinating the walk lists and will be available if you have any questions.

Wood River Schools Consolidation Movement

At the previous meeting Mike Babcock and Brendan Mckee presented the reasons why we should support the Wood River Schools consolidation movement.  For further information you can link to the "Citizens For A Better Education" website by clicking here.

1% sales tax increase for Madison County Schools

On April 5th the ballot will contain a vote for a 1% sales tax increase for Madison County Schools.  This increase is not in the best interest of the taxpayers.

One of the reasons that this is not a good idea is that it gives the school districts the power to increase your taxes in the event they are unable to make payments on the Bonds.

Another issue is that, although this is being sold as a break on your property taxes, historically, very few entities that have adopted these increases have actually passed these savings on to the taxpayer.

The odds are that once this measure is voted in, it will be a forever tax.
